Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Friday that Tehran will hold high-stakes nuclear negotiations with European powers and EU representatives in Geneva, amid escalating regional tensions. The talks involve diplomats from France, Germany, Britain, and the EU's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, as parties seek to revive diplomatic efforts stalled since the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal.
"We will meet with the European delegation in Geneva on Friday," Araghchi stated via Iran's state news agency IRNA. The meeting follows calls from European capitals for de-escalation after recent military exchanges between Israel and Iran. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul are set to participate.
The discussions unfold against a backdrop of heightened uncertainty, with U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly considering military options against Iranian nuclear facilities. EU officials, however, maintain that diplomacy remains the priority. "The path to lasting security lies at the negotiation table, not through escalation," emphasized Kallas, reaffirming Europe's commitment to preventing nuclear proliferation.
