China's senior political leader Wang Huning has renewed calls for strengthened unity and peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait during the 17th Straits Forum in Xiamen, emphasizing the inseparable bonds between residents on both sides and the 'unstoppable trend' of national reunification.
Historic Context and Shared Identity
Speaking to over 7,000 participants from the Taiwan region, Wang highlighted 2025's dual significance: the 80th anniversaries of both China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and Taiwan's recovery. 'These milestones remind us that both sides belong to one China,' said Wang, chair of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee.
Rejecting Separatism, Embracing Integration
Wang reiterated Beijing's commitment to the one-China principle and 1992 Consensus while opposing 'Taiwan independence' activities and external interference. He urged expanded economic cooperation and cultural exchanges, particularly targeting youth: 'We will ensure Taiwan's younger generation gains tangible benefits and a stronger sense of belonging.'

Ma Ying-jeou, former Kuomintang chairperson, echoed Wang's message, stating peaceful development remains the 'shared aspiration' across the strait. Both leaders emphasized the forum's role in fostering grassroots exchanges since its 2009 inception.
