U.S. Divided Over Troop Deployment in Los Angeles: Poll Reveals Stark Partisan Split

Poll Highlights National Divide

A new Washington Post-George Mason University poll shows Americans nearly evenly split on President Trump's decision to deploy troops to Los Angeles, with 41% supporting the move and 44% opposing it. The survey of 1,015 adults conducted via text message on June 10 reveals sharp partisan divisions, as 86% of Republicans back the deployment compared to just 10% of Democrats.

California Resistance Intensifies

Residents of California oppose the deployment more strongly, with 58% against it. Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit challenging the federal action, calling it an overreach of authority. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed a downtown curfew following clashes between protesters and police, with dozens arrested for curfew violations.

Protests Spread Nationwide

Demonstrations sparked by aggressive ICE raids have expanded to cities including Chicago and New York. While officials emphasize most protests remain peaceful, public opinion remains divided: 39% of Americans support the anti-immigration enforcement demonstrations, while 40% oppose them. The same poll shows 52% now disapprove of Trump's broader immigration strategy.

Military Presence and Legal Battles

The deployment of 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines aims to support immigration enforcement operations, according to federal officials. A federal judge heard arguments Thursday on Newsom' emergency motion to block the troop mobilization but has yet to issue a ruling.
