Orsay Museum Masterpieces Arrive in Shanghai for Landmark Exhibition

Shanghai art enthusiasts and international visitors are in for a historic treat as masterpieces from Paris’s renowned Musée d’Orsay were ceremoniously unveiled at the Museum of Art Pudong on June 9. The event marked the arrival of over 100 iconic works, including Vincent van Gogh’s vibrant Bedroom in Arles and Jean-François Millet’s socially charged The Gleaners, ahead of the Paths to Modernity: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris exhibition opening June 19.

This exhibition, the largest showcase of Orsay Museum works ever held in the Chinese mainland, features pieces by luminaries such as Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne. The collection traces Europe’s 19th-century artistic evolution, offering insights into industrialization, urbanization, and shifting societal values through brushstrokes.

French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak praised the collaboration as a “bridge of cultural dialogue” during her video address, while representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism highlighted the event’s role in deepening Sino-European cultural ties. The exhibition is expected to draw global audiences, reinforcing Shanghai’s position as a hub for international art exchange.

Tickets for the three-month exhibition are now available online, with timed entry slots to manage crowds. Art scholars and casual admirers alike can explore themes of modernity through curated sections, including Impressionist innovations and post-industrial realism.
