In a significant milestone for its maritime and energy sectors, the Chinese mainland marked a new achievement with the delivery of its largest domestically built liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. The vessel, named Celsius Georgetown, was officially handed over on April 26, 2026, showcasing the country's advanced capabilities in complex shipbuilding.
Constructed by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) at its Haimen base for Danish shipowner Celsius Shipping, the 180,000-cubic-meter carrier represents the first of its kind to be independently designed and built in China. Its completion sets a new record for the scale of LNG carriers produced by Chinese shipyards to date.
The Celsius Georgetown is equipped with a modern dual-fuel low-speed propulsion system and is engineered to safely transport LNG at the cryogenic temperature of minus 163 degrees Celsius. This technological sophistication underscores the progress made in the nation's high-end manufacturing and green shipping initiatives.
Following the delivery ceremony, the vessel departed for Singapore, where it will begin its role in the global energy logistics chain. The successful launch of this carrier is viewed as a positive step in enhancing the Chinese mainland's participation in international energy infrastructure and maritime trade.
