China Delivers Largest Domestically Built LNG Carrier

China's shipbuilding sector recently achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of its largest domestically designed and built liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. Named the 'Georgetown', this 180,000-cubic-meter vessel marks a breakthrough in the country's high-end, clean energy maritime technology.

The vessel was delivered from China Merchants Heavy Industry's dock in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. Measuring 298.8 meters in length and 48 meters in width, the Georgetown is a feat of modern engineering. It features a dual-fuel low-speed propulsion system, a low boil-off rate, and strong environmental performance.

LNG carriers, which transport natural gas cooled to minus 163 degrees Celsius, are considered among the most complex and technically demanding ships to build, often grouped with aircraft carriers and luxury cruise liners as the 'crown jewels' of the industry.

This delivery is more than just a single ship launch; it represents a leap in capability. With the Georgetown's completion, China now has five shipyards capable of delivering LNG carriers, solidifying its position among the world's leading nations in this critical sector. This advancement enhances the country's energy security and its role in the global clean energy transition.
