China's maritime industry reached a new milestone this week as the nation delivered its first domestically developed 8G95 marine liquefied natural gas dual-fuel engine in Dalian. Standing 16 meters tall and weighing over 1,600 tonnes, this engineering feat represents China's growing technological prowess in clean energy solutions for global shipping.
The 74,725-horsepower engine – currently the most powerful of its type developed in China – will power 24,000-TEU and 21,000-TEU ultra-large container ships. Its EcoEGR system addresses key environmental challenges through advanced emissions control technology.
Researchers overcame significant technical hurdles during development, including perfecting high-pressure natural gas injection systems and dynamic cylinder control mechanisms. This achievement positions Chinese shipbuilders to compete in the premium vessel market while supporting global decarbonization efforts in maritime transport.
