A Strategic Crossroads in Sichuan
In the annals of history, some of the most pivotal moments are defined not by conflict, but by unexpected alliances. Such was the case in late May 1935, when the Central Red Army arrived in Mianning County, situated in the rugged terrains of southwestern Sichuan. Facing relentless pursuit from enemy forces, the army's survival depended on their ability to move north, a journey that required them to traverse the ancestral lands of the Yi people.
At the time, the Yi people were a minority group that had long suffered under the oppression of the Nationalist government. Deeply distrustful of outsiders, they guarded their mountain strongholds fiercely. For the Red Army, the only viable path forward was a hidden trail through this territory, but gaining access required more than just strategic planning—it required trust.
The Ritual of Brotherhood
The turning point occurred on May 22, 1935, at the shores of Yihai Lake. Red Army Chief of Staff Liu Bocheng met with Yi Chief Xiao Yedan to negotiate passage. Rather than employing demands or force, Liu demonstrated a profound respect for local customs. In a powerful gesture of kinship, the two leaders performed a traditional Yi ritual: they killed a chicken, mixed its blood with water, and drank it together, becoming sworn brothers.
This pact, which became known as the Yihai Alliance, transformed a potentially hostile encounter into a partnership of mutual respect. By embracing the cultural traditions of the Yi people, the Red Army bridged a deep social divide and secured a critical alliance.
A Path to Safety
The impact of this alliance was immediate and decisive. For the following seven days, Yi guides led the Red Army through the treacherous mountain passes, shielding them from detection and ensuring their safe passage. This cooperation opened the vital road north to the Dadu River, facilitating the subsequent capture of the Luding Bridge and allowing the army to cross to safety.
Remarkably, not a single shot was fired within Yi territory during this transit. The Yihai Alliance remains a testament to the power of cultural empathy and the strategic importance of unity, illustrating how a simple act of respect can alter the course of history.
