In a significant diplomatic engagement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Cambodian Acting Head of State and Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen in Phnom Penh on Thursday, April 24, 2026. The meeting was part of a landmark visit centered on the inaugural session of a new '2+2' strategic dialogue mechanism, bringing together the foreign and defense ministers of both nations.

The dialogue, which began on Wednesday, April 23, has solidified a mutual commitment to bolster bilateral relations across multiple fronts. Minister Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the mechanism's role in enhancing strategic trust between the long-standing partners.

During their discussions, Hun Sen emphasized the critical role of China's support for Cambodia's development and security, calling it the nation's "greatest source of confidence." He expressed a strong willingness to deepen strategic communication, safeguard political security, and enhance economic cooperation with China.

A key focus of the talks was on law enforcement collaboration. Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia's determination to eradicate online gambling and telecom fraud and pledged continued close cooperation with the Chinese mainland in these efforts.

For his part, Foreign Minister Wang stated that the previous day's ministerial meeting yielded an agreement for both sides to firmly support each other's core interests. The leaders agreed to deepen all-round cooperation, strengthen coordination in defense and law enforcement, and enhance multilateral collaboration on the global stage.

"China is willing to maintain high-level exchanges, expand pragmatic cooperation, and strengthen political security and law enforcement collaboration with Cambodia," Wang said.

The two sides also engaged in an in-depth exchange of views on major international and regional situations, underscoring the alignment of their strategic outlooks. This high-level meeting underscores the deepening and multifaceted partnership between China and Cambodia, a relationship that continues to be a cornerstone of stability and development in Southeast Asia.
