In a significant move to bolster ties, China has expressed its willingness to deepen comprehensive cooperation with Cambodia, emphasizing the coordination of development and security. The commitment was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks held in Phnom Penh on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn. The discussions highlighted the success of the inaugural China-Cambodia "2+2" strategic dialogue between foreign and defense ministers, a mechanism both sides hailed as reinforcing their long-term partnership.
"Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to being long-term, reliable good friends and partners," Wang stated, underscoring the strength of the bilateral relationship.
Beyond bilateral ties, the Chinese foreign minister addressed regional dynamics. He noted China's readiness to act as a facilitator to rebuild trust and improve relations between Cambodia and Thailand, offering to provide more platforms for direct communication between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Sokhonn welcomed the outcomes of the high-level meeting, stating it enhanced mutual political trust and played a crucial role in deepening cooperation. He specifically acknowledged China's "valuable support" in key areas such as infrastructure, clean energy, agriculture, and finance, expressing Cambodia's desire to continue expanding this collaboration.
The Cambodian side also briefed the Chinese delegation on the ongoing Cambodia-Thailand border situation, expressing gratitude for China's mediation efforts—a role that highlights Beijing's growing involvement in regional diplomacy.
The talks concluded with an exchange of views on broader international and regional issues of common concern, signaling the alignment of both countries on various geopolitical fronts. This meeting reinforces the strategic depth of China-Cambodia relations as both nations navigate the complex landscape of Asian politics and economics in 2026.
