China Strengthens Ties with Mozambique in Beijing State Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo at a welcome ceremony in Beijing on Tuesday, reaffirming bilateral cooperation amid growing economic partnerships between China and African nations. The visit, Chapo’s first state trip to China since assuming office in 2025, underscores Mozambique’s strategic role in Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure network.

Analysts highlight Mozambique’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) reserves and agricultural potential as key areas for collaboration. During talks, Xi emphasized China’s commitment to "win-win partnerships" in energy and food security, while Chapo praised Chinese-backed port modernization projects in Maputo and Nacala.

The meeting follows China’s recent pledge to increase imports of African agricultural products by 50% this year, a move expected to benefit Mozambique’s cashew and sugar industries. Cross-strait trade between the Chinese mainland and Mozambique reached $7.3 billion USD in 2025, according to customs data.
