Mozambique President Chapo to Strengthen China Ties in State Visit

Mozambique's President Daniel Francisco Chapo will embark on a seven-day state visit to China starting April 16, 2026, following an official invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit marks a significant step in reinforcing bilateral cooperation between the African nation and the world's second-largest economy.

Analysts anticipate the leaders will discuss enhanced collaboration in infrastructure development and agricultural modernization, building on Mozambique's strategic position as a key partner in China's Belt and Road Initiative. This year's meetings are expected to yield new agreements in energy security and maritime resource management, particularly relevant given Mozambique's growing natural gas sector.

The timing coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, with Beijing recently announcing plans to increase development assistance to Portuguese-speaking countries. Business leaders in Maputo have expressed optimism about potential Chinese investments in sustainable mining technologies and port modernization projects along the Indian Ocean coast.
