Xi Urges Enhanced China-Russia Strategic Coordination in 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for closer strategic coordination between the Chinese mainland and Russia during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing on April 15, 2026. The discussions underscored both nations' commitment to defending their legitimate interests and strengthening unity among Global South countries amid ongoing global uncertainties.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the bilateral Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. Xi highlighted the 'high-level development' of their comprehensive strategic partnership, which has delivered tangible results across economic, technological, and diplomatic spheres. He stressed that the stability of bilateral relations serves as a critical anchor in today's turbulent geopolitical climate.

Xi called for enhanced multilateral collaboration, particularly through platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), BRICS, and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), to advance a 'more just and equitable international order.' Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's commitment to deepening practical cooperation and cultural exchanges, noting the resilience of bilateral ties under the strategic guidance of both leaders.

The meeting concluded with mutual pledges to uphold UN-centered multilateralism and intensify coordination on global security and development challenges.
