Xi Jinping Welcomes Vietnam’s Leader to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted a grand welcome ceremony in Beijing on April 15, 2026, for Vietnamese President To Lam, marking a significant step in cross-border cooperation. The meeting between the two Communist Party leaders comes amid growing economic integration across Southeast Asia, with bilateral trade reaching $230 billion USD in 2025.

President Xi emphasized China's commitment to 'shared development prosperity' during the talks, highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects like the Hanoi-Kunming high-speed rail link scheduled for completion in late 2027. The leaders also discussed enhanced collaboration in renewable energy sectors, particularly solar panel manufacturing and offshore wind farms.

This visit follows Vietnam's recent participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which has boosted export opportunities for both nations. Analysts note the timing coincides with increased overseas investment in Vietnam's tech manufacturing sector, with many Chinese firms expanding operations in Ho Chi Minh City's industrial zones.

Cultural exchanges formed another key discussion point, with both sides agreeing to double annual student exchange quotas by 2028. The agreement includes new Confucius Institute branches in Da Nang and enhanced Vietnamese language programs at Beijing University.
