US Denies Fifth Fleet Targeted Following Iranian Missile Attacks in the Gulf

Tensions in the Persian Gulf escalated this week as the United States military denied claims by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that the US Fifth Fleet headquarters had been successfully targeted.

According to the US Central Command, Iran launched a series of ballistic missiles toward regional neighbors on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. However, the US military asserted that all missiles failed to hit their intended targets. Specifically, two missiles fired toward Kuwait either fell short or broke apart during flight, while three missiles aimed at Bahrain were intercepted by combined US and Bahraini forces.

In a reciprocal move, the US Central Command reported that US forces carried out strikes on Qeshm Island. These operations were described as a response to attempted attacks by Iran and included the defeat of multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones.

Contradicting these reports, the IRGC claimed via the Tasnim news agency on Wednesday that they had struck the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. The IRGC stated this action was retaliation for a previous US military strike on an IRGC telecommunications tower located south of Qeshm Island.

The volatility of the situation was felt on the ground. Bahrain's interior ministry sounded warning sirens on Wednesday, urging residents to remain calm and seek safety. Simultaneously, the Kuwaiti military confirmed that its air defense systems were actively responding to missile and drone threats targeting the country.
