Honduras has been shaken by a wave of violence following two separate armed attacks on Thursday, resulting in at least 24 fatalities across the northern departments of Colon and Cortes.
The first tragedy occurred at a palm plantation in Trujillo, located in the Colon department. According to reports from local media, a shooting at the site claimed the lives of 19 civilians. Authorities have already identified 17 of the victims as they continue to process the scene.
In a separate and equally devastating incident, five officers from the National Police's Anti-Gang Police Directorate were killed in the village of Corinto, Cortes. The officers were conducting an armed raid when a violent confrontation erupted.
Yuri Mora, a spokesperson for the Honduran Public Prosecutor's Office, stated that the officers were overpowered by criminals during a fierce clash, leading to the loss of five lives.
These events underscore the persistent security challenges and the volatile nature of gang-related conflicts in the region, leaving local communities in mourning and raising urgent concerns regarding public safety.
