The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines has stepped in to ensure the welfare of its citizens following a significant law enforcement operation in the Misamis Oriental province.
On May 15, Philippine authorities conducted a raid on a steel manufacturing plant located in Tagoloan. The operation resulted in the arrest of 69 Chinese nationals and one Filipino individual. The detainees were subsequently transferred to a detention facility operated by the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
In response to the incident, the Chinese Embassy confirmed that it has dispatched officials to the NBI facility to conduct consular visits. These visits are part of the embassy's commitment to monitor the condition of the workers and provide necessary support during their detention.
The embassy has formally urged the Philippine government to handle the cases with urgency, emphasizing the need for a process that is lawful, fair, and appropriate. Furthermore, the embassy stressed the importance of effectively safeguarding the safety and legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese citizens involved.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the situation highlights the ongoing importance of consular protection and the adherence to international legal standards in the treatment of foreign workers within the region.
