Solomon Islands PM Jeremiah Manele Removed in Parliamentary No-Confidence Vote

Political Shift in Honiara

In a decisive move that has reshaped the political landscape of the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele was removed from office on Thursday. The National Parliament passed a motion of no-confidence in a closely contested vote, marking a significant turning point for the nation's leadership.

The motion succeeded by a narrow margin, with 26 votes in favor and 22 against. The session saw high participation, with 48 of the 50 members of parliament casting their ballots, while two remained absent. This vote effectively brings an end to Manele's two-year tenure and dissolves the "government for national unity and transformation," which had been in place for 24 months.

The push for leadership change was spearheaded by a new coalition led by Frederick Kologeto, Member of Parliament for South Vella Lavella and a representative of the People's First Party. According to the motion, the drive for change was fueled by persistent political instability that has plagued the administration since Manele first took office in 2024.

As the country navigates this transition, the Parliament has adjourned sine die. This pause allows members from both the government and opposition benches to gather nominations and rally support for potential candidates to lead the nation.

Until a date is finalized for the election of a new leader, Jeremiah Manele will continue to serve as prime minister in a caretaker capacity, ensuring administrative continuity during this period of political realignment.
