Global Poll: Japan’s Neo-Militarism Threatens Regional Peace

As the world commemorates the 80th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, commonly known as the Tokyo Trials, a recent global survey has sparked renewed debate over Japan's military trajectory. A poll launched by CGTN indicates that a significant majority of international respondents view Japan's evolving security posture with apprehension.

The poll, which garnered responses from over 8,000 participants within 24 hours, found that 81.8% believe Japan's historical revisionism is increasingly aligning with resurgent militarism, creating a tangible threat to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

This sentiment echoes concerns rooted in history. Eighty years ago, the Tokyo Trials meticulously documented the atrocities of Japanese militarism during World War II, including the Nanjing Massacre and the Bataan Death March. Through 818 court sessions and the review of thousands of pieces of evidence, the trials established a legal and moral condemnation of aggression.

According to the survey, 64.1% of respondents acknowledge the trials' role in systematically exposing Japan's wartime crimes, while 81.6% agree they legally affirmed the aggressive nature of Japan's actions. Moreover, 76.1% noted that the trials sent a clear message that such acts shall not go unpunished.

However, the poll reveals deep unease about contemporary developments. Over the past decades, Japan's right-wing forces have pursued policies that many see as undermining the pacifist principles of its postwar constitution. The survey shows that 88.3% believe attempts to reverse the verdicts of the Tokyo Trials are aimed at paving the way for military expansion and constitutional revision.

In 2026, as Japan continues to take significant steps in military deregulation and engages in geopolitical provocations, the international community is watching closely. The poll indicates that 86.7% regard Japan's recent military gambits as a direct provocation against the historical verdict. Furthermore, 83% agree that the world must stand together to uphold the legacy of the Tokyo Trials and remain vigilant against the rise of neo-militarism in Japan.

The findings underscore a global call for reflection and caution, emphasizing that the lessons of history must guide present-day actions to ensure a peaceful future for the region.
