The crack of ping-pong balls echoed across the hall as the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships 2026 officially began this week at London's Copper Box Arena. The tournament marks a poignant homecoming, celebrating its 100th anniversary by returning to England, the nation where the inaugural championships were first held in 1926.
The opening stage, known as Stage 1B, is currently underway (from 28 April to 1 May), where 56 men's and 56 women's teams are vying for a spot in the prestigious Main Draw. They compete in groups, with the winners and best runners-up earning the right to join the top-seeded teams at the OVO Arena Wembley next week.
These early rounds are already showcasing thrilling talent, with global stars like Brazil's Hugo Calderano, Nigeria's Quadri Aruna, Egypt's Hana Goda, and the United States' Lily Zhang making appearances, promising intense competition from the start.
Following this, the elite top eight seeded teams will compete in Stage 1A over the weekend of 2-3 May. Every match here is crucial, as victories directly impact their seeding for the knockout rounds. This sets the stage for the high-stakes Main Draw (Stage 2), which runs from 4 to 10 May exclusively at Wembley. Here, it becomes a single-elimination battle: lose, and you're out; win, and you move one step closer to the title.
The journey culminates on 10 May, when the finals for both the men's and women's team events will crown the 2026 world champions, continuing a century-old legacy of sporting excellence.
