Spain’s Sanchez Rejects US NATO Suspension Threat Over Iran Stance

In a firm rebuttal to reported pressure from Washington, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has reaffirmed his country's commitment to the NATO alliance. The move comes amid tensions over European members' reluctance to support U.S.-led military operations against Iran.

Citing an anonymous U.S. official, a Reuters report this week suggested the Pentagon had explored options to suspend Spain from NATO. The alleged internal email also mentioned reviewing U.S. policy on the Falkland Islands in response to the UK's stance.

"Spain is a reliable member within NATO," Sanchez stated during a visit to Cyprus for an EU summit. "We are fulfilling all our obligations, and as a result, I am absolutely not worried." He emphasized that his government operates based on official documents, not unofficial emails.

The report highlights ongoing strains within the transatlantic alliance. Since returning to office in January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for not contributing more to the war effort in the Middle East. Some European nations, including Spain, France, and Italy, have restricted U.S. military overflights and base usage for operations against Iran.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, also in Cyprus, stressed that "NATO must remain united," calling it a source of strength. Sanchez echoed the need for cooperation within international law.

Notably, the NATO treaty lacks provisions for suspending or expelling members, making any such action legally complex. A Pentagon spokesperson did not deny the report, stating the Defense Department aims to ensure allies "do their part."

This incident follows previous friction; last year, Sanchez refused Trump's demand to increase NATO defense spending to five percent of GDP. The upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye on July 7-8 will likely address these unity challenges as the alliance navigates a turbulent global landscape.
