Senegal’s Faye Urges Global Governance Reform to Amplify Africa’s Voice

Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has called for a radical overhaul of global governance frameworks, emphasizing the need to prioritize Africa's role in shaping international policies. Speaking at a two-day conference of Senegal's ambassadors and consuls general in Diamniadio this week, Faye stressed that the continent must no longer accept a "marginalized position" in institutions established after World War II.

"The world is undergoing seismic shifts, yet our mechanisms for cooperation remain outdated," Faye declared on April 19, 2026, citing escalating conflicts and nuclear tensions as evidence of systemic failures. He criticized unilateral military actions as violations of the UN Charter and warned they risk destabilizing global peace.

The president advocated for stronger African integration to consolidate the continent's influence, urging diplomats to champion multilateral reforms that reflect 21st-century realities. The conference, concluding today at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center, focused on modernizing Senegal's diplomatic strategies to advance these goals.

Faye's remarks align with growing demands from Global South nations for equitable representation in bodies like the UN Security Council. Analysts suggest his speech signals Senegal's ambition to lead Africa's push for structural changes in international governance.
