In a move that has surprised the tech world, AI startup Anthropic announced a major computing partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX. This strategic alliance grants the creator of the Claude AI series access to a vast data center, enabling the company to keep pace with the surging global demand for its advanced AI services.
A Powerhouse of Compute
Under the terms of the agreement, Anthropic will utilize the full capacity of SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center located in Memphis, Tennessee. Originally designed to support Musk's own AI venture, xAI, the facility is now providing Anthropic with more than 300 megawatts of power and over 220,000 Nvidia AI chips within a single month. This massive influx of resources is expected to directly benefit subscribers of Anthropic's Claude Pro and Claude Max plans.
Parallel to the infrastructure deal, Anthropic is immediately expanding the capabilities of its technology. The company has doubled the usage limits for Claude Code—an AI-powered assistant used for writing, editing, and debugging software—for paying subscribers during five-hour windows. Additionally, previous restrictions that limited access during peak usage periods have been eliminated.
From Rivalry to Collaboration
The partnership is particularly striking given the history of public friction between the leaders of the two organizations. Elon Musk previously criticized Anthropic in February, claiming the company "hates Western Civilization." Conversely, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has frequently clashed with Musk and other Silicon Valley figures over his vocal warnings regarding the inherent dangers of AI.
Amodei's challenges have extended beyond the tech sector, including tensions with the Trump administration after the Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply chain risk earlier this year—a move Anthropic described as unconstitutional retaliation for its AI safety advocacy.
However, the atmosphere shifted on Wednesday. Musk praised Anthropic's staff on X, describing them as "highly competent and caring a great deal about doing the right thing." In a further surprising development, Musk announced that xAI will be dissolved and rebranded as SpaceXAI, though specific details regarding the transition were not provided.
Environmental and Political Headwinds
The Colossus 1 facility has not been without controversy. To power the site, xAI installed numerous natural gas turbines, asserting that temporary use exempted the project from federal permits. This move sparked protests from civil rights groups who warned of increased air pollution in the Memphis area.
This deal is the latest in a series of high-profile infrastructure agreements for Anthropic, following partnerships with Amazon, Google, Broadcom, Microsoft, Nvidia, and an investment with Fluidstack.

While Anthropic recently launched 10 AI agents tailored for the financial sector—including banks and asset managers—OpenAI has partnered with PwC to support financial operations.
