Sanya’s 2026 Asian Beach Games Unveil Vision of Vitality, Openness

Innovative Opening Ceremony Sets Stage for Regional Unity

As Sanya prepares to host the 2026 Asian Beach Games this year, opening ceremony co-director Zhang Dongxin reveals an ambitious vision blending technology, culture, and geopolitics. The production at Tianyahaijiao beach – the first major sporting event staged directly on Sanya's iconic shoreline – will feature athletes parading through waves in a symbolic maritime procession.

Robots and Revelry

Nearly 30 minutes of the ceremony will showcase intelligent robots working alongside human guides, greeting athletes from 45 countries and regions in their native languages. This technological first for Asian sporting events aligns with Hainan's development as a Free Trade Port, now entering its post-customs closure phase.

Cultural Diplomacy Through Sport

Zhang emphasizes the ceremony's three core themes – vitality, openness, and joy – reflect both Sanya's transformation and China's global engagement. 'Through bold artistic innovation,' he notes, 'we aim to present Hainan as a microcosm of modern China: dynamic, secure, and brimming with opportunity.' The production team has designed interactive elements to highlight cross-cultural connections across the Asia-Pacific region.
