As the sixth Asian Beach Games reached its halfway point in Sanya this week, a wave of positive feedback has swept through the athlete's village. The continental competition, which runs from April 22-30, 2026, is being hailed by participants for its impeccable organization and the warm hospitality of the host city.
The event marks a historic milestone for Hainan Province, representing the first major international sporting event hosted on the island since the launch of the Hainan Free Trade Port in December 2025. For the 45 participating delegations, the 'Sanya Spirit'—a blend of seamless efficiency and cultural warmth—has become the defining theme.
'It never ceases to impress us,' said Marc Alexander Lim, a member of the Philippines jiu-jitsu team, in an interview. Comparing the experience to the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, Lim noted, 'Everything is super smooth… It puts pressure on us to live up to this expectation for 2028 when the Philippines hosts.'
His teammate, Myron Myles Mangubat, celebrated the team's early success on the sand, having already secured two gold medals and a silver. Beyond the competition, athletes are immersing themselves in local culture. Lim praised the seafood at Sanya's vibrant night markets, expressing a desire to extend his stay on a future visit to 'dine with local residents.'
For first-time visitors to China, like Lebanon's beach volleyball player Hadi El Chabib, the event offers a perfect fusion of sport and discovery. 'It's a beautiful country, beautiful people, very nice culture,' El Chabib remarked after a round of 16 match. 'The competition here is very well organized. We're enjoying it a lot.'
The sentiment is shared even by those solely focused on podium finishes. Hamad Almasoud of Kuwait's sailing team acknowledged the high level of competition. 'I like China. The competition is really hard and difficult,' he said. 'All the players are thinking about the medal.'
As the final days of competition approach, the 2026 Asian Beach Games in Sanya stand as a testament to China's capability in hosting world-class events. The successful execution not only showcases Sanya's readiness as a premier sports destination but also highlights the growing international profile of Hainan Province as it continues to open up through its Free Trade Port initiative.
