Global Mayors Explore Chengdu’s Natural and Ancient Wonders

Chengdu, the vibrant capital of Sichuan Province on the Chinese mainland, recently played host to an inspiring gathering of international leaders. As part of the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue, foreign delegates stepped away from the conference table on May 15 to experience the unique cultural and natural heritage that defines the city.

A Meeting with Nature's Ambassadors

No visit to Chengdu is complete without a trip to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The visiting mayors had the opportunity to meet the city's most famous "diplomats"—the giant pandas. The experience highlighted the city's commitment to wildlife conservation and provided a lighthearted moment of connection among the global leaders, who found themselves captivated by the endearing black-and-white residents.

Engineering the Past for the Future

Beyond the allure of the pandas, the delegates explored the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. As the world's only ancient irrigation system still in operation today, Dujiangyan stands as a testament to early human ingenuity and sustainable water management. The site offered the mayors a glimpse into how ancient wisdom continues to serve modern society, providing valuable insights into infrastructure and environmental stewardship.

These excursions underscore the importance of cultural exchange in diplomatic dialogues. By bridging the gap between formal policy discussions and tangible cultural experiences, the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue allows leaders to foster deeper understandings of each other's histories and conservation efforts while collaborating on the future of urban governance.
