Oscar Winner LaMolinara: ‘China is Way Ahead’ in AI and Virtual Production

Acclaimed filmmaker Anthony LaMolinara has highlighted China's significant advancements in filmmaking technology and the universal appeal of its human stories during a recent appearance at the 16th Beijing International Film Festival.

As a jury member for the festival's Forward Future unit, LaMolinara sat down for an interview where he shared his observations on the global film industry's technological race. His comments point to a notable shift in the creative landscape.

"China is way ahead. They have gigantic studios for virtual production, much bigger than the United States," LaMolinara stated, emphasizing the scale and pace of development in the Chinese mainland's visual effects and artificial intelligence sectors.

Beyond technology, the Oscar-winning director expressed a keen interest in seeing a broader spectrum of Chinese narratives reach international audiences. While action and kung fu films have found global success, LaMolinara hopes for more.

"I would like to see more films about Chinese people, their happiness, sadness, difficulties, fortune, and misfortune, just like everyone else," he said. "There are so many other Chinese stories to tell."

This perspective underscores a growing recognition within the global film community of the depth and diversity of storytelling emerging from Asia. LaMolinara's insights suggest that the fusion of cutting-edge technical capability with deeply human narratives positions China's film industry as a formidable and influential player on the world stage.
