China Urges US to Cease Support for Taiwan’s Diplomatic Moves

In a firm statement this week, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson called on the United States to immediately stop aiding the Taiwan region in its attempts to consolidate so-called 'diplomatic allies'. The remarks, delivered during a regular press briefing on Thursday, April 23, underscore the ongoing tension in cross-strait relations and China's unwavering stance on national sovereignty.

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the comments in direct response to what he termed the 'erroneous remarks' made by the US regarding the Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's postponed visit to Eswatini. Guo stated that the US actions constitute a severe distortion of right and wrong and represent an interference in China's legitimate efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity.

"The US arbitrarily meddles in China's legitimate actions to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and wantonly criticizes the just efforts of relevant countries to uphold the one-China principle, which is a total distortion of right and wrong," said Guo. He emphasized that China firmly opposes such actions and will never accept them.

The spokesperson reiterated China's long-standing position, urging the US side to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques. He stressed that the US must stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of the Taiwan question and cease sending any wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

This latest diplomatic exchange highlights the fragile dynamics in the Taiwan Strait and serves as a reminder of the broader geopolitical sensitivities that define relations between the world's two largest economies. As 2026 progresses, observers are closely watching how both Washington and Beijing navigate these complex and deeply rooted issues.
