China Urges Philippines to Restrain Official Remarks to Preserve Bilateral Ties

In a move to safeguard diplomatic stability, China's Foreign Ministry has called on the Philippines to exercise restraint regarding the public statements made by its officials. This request comes in the wake of comments from the Philippine defense chief, who described China as a "threat" during the recent Shangri-La Dialogue.

Speaking at a press conference on May 29, 2026, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the importance of consistency between diplomatic rhetoric and actual conduct. According to Mao, while Philippine leadership has repeatedly voiced a willingness to manage differences and ease tensions, the rhetoric from certain officials contradicts these stated goals.

"We hope the Philippines will match its words with actions, strictly restrain the conduct and remarks of its officials, and not allow a few individuals to repeatedly undermine efforts by both sides to maintain stable relations," Mao stated during the briefing.

The call for restraint highlights the delicate balancing act currently taking place in Southeast Asian diplomacy. As both nations navigate complex regional dynamics, the Chinese side continues to advocate for a constructive approach to conflict management, urging a shift away from provocative language toward sustainable bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding.
