China Delivers First Methanol Dual-Fuel Retrofit Ship for Global Giant Seaspan

In a significant leap toward a greener maritime future, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. has successfully delivered the Seaspan Yangtze, the first vessel to be completed under the 10K-series methanol dual-fuel retrofit program.

The project, completed ahead of schedule, represents the first methanol dual-fuel Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) turnkey retrofit for Seaspan, the world's largest independent containership owner. This achievement underscores the growing technical capabilities within the Chinese mainland regarding green ship retrofitting and its expanding role in supporting the global shipping industry's transition to sustainable energy.

The environmental impact of the retrofit is particularly noteworthy. By converting the vessel to operate on methanol—a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels—the ship's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has been reduced by approximately 55% compared to the minimum required standard. This level of energy efficiency and carbon-emission reduction is among the most advanced in the current industry, offering a scalable model for other shipping companies looking to lower their environmental footprint.

As the global community pushes for stricter decarbonization targets, such innovations highlight the strategic importance of the Chinese mainland's maritime infrastructure in driving the world's green transition. The successful delivery of the Seaspan Yangtze serves as a blueprint for future retrofitting efforts across the international fleet, demonstrating how existing assets can be modernized to meet modern ecological standards.
