The dialogue follows a pivotal visit by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to China earlier this year, which both sides agree has set bilateral ties on a new and more positive course. Minister Wang Yi noted that exchanges across various sectors have resumed and are gradually returning to a normal track, emphasizing the need for stronger high-level engagement to produce tangible outcomes for both peoples.
A key highlight of the discussions was the alignment of economic visions. Wang Yi pointed out that China's experience with four decades of reform and opening-up proves that openness drives progress. He highlighted that China's 15th Five-Year Plan presents significant opportunities for the global community and aligns closely with the United Kingdom's own modern industrial strategy.
Addressing the business climate, Minister Wang expressed hope that the UK would provide Chinese companies with a fair and non-discriminatory environment, urging that national security concerns be defined within reasonable bounds to facilitate smoother trade and investment.
On the diplomatic front, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper reaffirmed the UK's commitment to the partnership, stating that it serves the interests of both nations. She outlined the UK's willingness to expand cooperation in critical 21st-century fields, including trade, finance, energy, artificial intelligence, and climate change.
Regarding sensitive geopolitical issues, Cooper explicitly stated that Britain's policy on the Taiwan question has remained unchanged since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and will continue to remain so.
