In a significant move toward stabilizing and enhancing bilateral ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper convened in Beijing on Tuesday for the 11th China-UK Strategic Dialogue. The high-level meeting centered on a shared commitment to advance a long-term and consistent comprehensive strategic partnership.
A New Course for Bilateral Relations
Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted that the consensus established during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit to China earlier this year has set a new trajectory for the two nations. With exchanges and cooperation across various sectors gradually returning to a normal track, Wang emphasized the need for stronger high-level engagement to achieve tangible results.
A key point of discussion was China's 15th Five-Year Plan. Wang noted that the plan's focus on openness and progress offers significant opportunities for the global community and aligns closely with Britain's own modern industrial strategy. To facilitate this synergy, Wang called for a fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies, urging that national security concerns be defined within reasonable bounds.
Expanding Cooperation and Managing Differences
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper echoed the sentiment, stating that a stable, long-term partnership serves the interests of both nations. The UK expressed a strong willingness to expand cooperation in critical future-facing sectors, including trade, finance, energy, artificial intelligence (AI), and climate change.
On sensitive political fronts, Cooper reaffirmed that Britain's policy regarding the Taiwan region has remained unchanged since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China. Both sides agreed to manage their differences through candid dialogue to ensure the steady development of their relationship.
Beyond bilateral concerns, the dialogue also touched upon pressing international and regional issues, including the situations in Iran and Ukraine, reflecting the two countries' roles in shaping global stability.
