China and Bangladesh Pledge Deeper Cooperation and Strategic Growth in Beijing Talks

In a significant move to bolster regional ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman held high-level talks in Beijing this week, vowing to deepen practical cooperation and enhance political mutual trust between the two nations.

During the meeting, Wang Yi, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China's commitment to being a reliable partner in Bangladesh's national development. He highlighted China's support for the new Bangladeshi government, particularly in its efforts to maintain unity, ensure stability, and revitalize economic growth to improve the well-being of its people.

A key focus of the discussions was the alignment of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Bangladesh's own national development strategies. Minister Wang expressed readiness to expand collaboration across a broad spectrum of sectors, ranging from traditional areas such as infrastructure, trade, investment, and water conservancy, to emerging industries including the digital economy and green development. He further noted that China would actively support its enterprises in investing within Bangladesh.

Addressing regional dynamics, Wang stressed that China's engagement with Bangladesh and other South Asian countries is independent and does not target any third party, nor should these relations be influenced by external actors.

Responding to these sentiments, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman described China as a trustworthy and indispensable partner. He affirmed that the new government in Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relationship with China and remains committed to the one-China principle. Rahman explicitly recognized that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, supporting the eventual realization of national reunification.

Minister Rahman expressed a strong desire to elevate the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to a new level, seeking to leverage Chinese support to accelerate Bangladesh's economic and social development. He reassured Chinese investors of a stable, sound, and predictable business environment for those looking to establish or expand operations in Bangladesh.

The talks concluded with both sides exchanging views on critical international and regional issues of common concern, culminating in the issuance of a joint press release that outlines their shared vision for a prosperous and cooperative future.
