In a significant indicator of environmental progress, the Chinese mainland has seen its national vegetation quality reach its second-highest level since satellite monitoring began in 2000. This finding was detailed in a national ecological meteorology report for 2025, released by the China Meteorological Administration.
The report, now in its 10th year of tracking, highlights that the year 2025 was characterized by favorable temperature and rainfall patterns across the country. These conditions were second only to the exceptional weather witnessed in 2024, collectively driving broad ecological improvements across various terrains, including forests, grasslands, farmlands, and desert regions.
According to the data, the vegetation ecological quality index for 2025 hit 69.1, which is 6.6% above the long-term average. The report further reveals that approximately two-thirds of the land area in the Chinese mainland was rated as having "good" or "very good" ecological vegetation quality.
A standout achievement was recorded in forest zones, which set a new historical record. Their specific quality index rose 0.9% above the previous high established in 2024, signaling a robust trend in reforestation and overall ecological health.
