In a series of high-level diplomatic engagements in New York, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently met with his Cuban and Portuguese counterparts to discuss international cooperation and the strengthening of the global order. Wang, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, is currently in the city to preside over a critical United Nations Security Council meeting focused on upholding the principles of the UN Charter and reinforcing a UN-centered international system.
Strengthening Solidarity with Cuba
During a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, Wang Yi emphasized China's commitment to upholding justice and speaking up for Cuba. He reaffirmed China's support for the just cause of the Cuban people and expressed a willingness to assist in Cuba's economic and livelihood development.
Wang highlighted that the current theme of the Security Council meeting reflects shared global aspirations. He stressed that achieving these objectives requires a steadfast respect for the sovereignty and independence of all nations, while firmly opposing power politics and bullying.
A Shared Vision for the Global South
Foreign Minister Rodriguez expressed his gratitude for Cuba's participation in the high-level meeting, noting that in a world characterized by turbulence and disorder, China possesses the unique capacity to forge international consensus and safeguard the legitimate rights of the Global South.
Rodriguez highlighted that Cuba is navigating its most challenging period since the revolution, primarily due to blockades and sanctions imposed by the United States. He lauded China's firm support in safeguarding Cuba's sovereignty and security, describing the assistance as a testament to the special friendship between the two nations.
Further cementing this strategic partnership, Rodriguez affirmed that Cuba continues to support China's positions regarding Taiwan, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong. He expressed Cuba's readiness to strengthen strategic communication and coordination to advance their respective socialist causes and promote international fairness.
Expanding Dialogue
In addition to the talks with Cuba, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a separate meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, continuing China's efforts to engage with diverse global partners to foster a more stable and just international environment.
