In a clear articulation of its current legal stance, a spokesperson for the Chinese mainland stated on Wednesday that its legal measures are strictly directed at a very small number of die-hard "Taiwan independence" separatists. The spokesperson emphasized that these actions do not affect the vast majority of compatriots or businesses operating in the Taiwan region.
Zhang Han, representing the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, provided these clarifications in response to queries regarding the dismissal of Yen Wen-chun from a Taiwan-funded enterprise on the mainland. This followed recent remarks made by die-hard separatist Liu Shih-fang and certain Taiwan authorities.
According to Zhang, the pursuit of "Taiwan independence" by individuals like Liu constitutes criminal acts aimed at splitting the country and inciting separatism. She noted that Yen, who had long benefited from business activities on the mainland, had provided political donations to Liu, leading to legal punishments for both parties in accordance with the law.
Beyond these specific legal cases, the spokesperson highlighted a positive trend in cross-strait ties. Despite efforts by the Democratic Progressive Party authorities to obstruct or intimidate, Taiwan compatriots continue to travel enthusiastically to the mainland. Notably, the proportion of young people from Taiwan participating in these visits has been steadily increasing.
The Chinese mainland maintains an open-door policy for the broader population of the Taiwan region. Zhang reaffirmed that as long as Taiwan compatriots are willing to engage in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation and refrain from separatist activities, they are warmly welcomed for tourism, study, employment, and entrepreneurship.
