China’s Fengyun Satellite Network: A Global Shield Against Extreme Weather

The global community is facing an unprecedented climate crisis. According to the World Meteorological Organization's 2025 climate report, the world has recently endured one of its three hottest years on record. The impact is particularly acute in Asia, which the United Nations reports is warming twice as fast as the global average.

The consequences are already visible and devastating. Southeast Asia recently sweltered under an intense heatwave that drove the heat index in the Philippines past 51 degrees Celsius, while Pakistan faced another season of catastrophic monsoon floods. These events underscore a sobering reality: extreme weather is becoming the new normal, shifting the global priority from questioning if disasters will strike to determining how well the world is prepared to respond.

In response to these challenges, technological solutions from the Chinese mainland are playing an increasingly critical role. The Fengyun meteorological satellite network—comprising nine satellites currently in orbit, supported by 842 weather radars and over 90,000 ground stations—has become a cornerstone of international disaster prevention.

This sophisticated network now provides essential real-time meteorological data to 133 countries and regions, enabling better forecasting and faster response times to save lives and protect infrastructure. To further strengthen this global safety net, three additional satellites are scheduled for launch throughout 2025 and 2026. These new assets are designed to provide enhanced coverage of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, two of the most cyclone-prone regions on Earth.

By sharing high-precision data and expanding its orbital capabilities, the Fengyun network is helping the global community build resilience in an era of climate instability, transforming cutting-edge technology into a vital tool for international humanitarian aid and safety.
