In an era of unprecedented global transformation, the dynamics between the world's leading powers have evolved beyond simple bilateral ties, becoming a primary force that shapes the international landscape and the global order. As the world navigates these complex shifts, the need for a responsible and stable relationship between the United States and China has never been more apparent.
A comprehensive global survey recently released by CGTN and Renmin University of China underscores this sentiment. Conducted through the Institute of International Communication Studies in the New Era, the study gathered perspectives from 12,302 respondents across 39 countries. The findings are clear: 75% of global respondents believe that healthy and stable China-US relations are crucial to the international community.
This widespread consensus is particularly evident among developing nations and within the United States itself. Approximately 78.3% of respondents from developing countries view the relationship as vital to world peace, stability, and prosperity, noting its significant impact on global trade and geopolitics. Interestingly, 76.7% of American respondents shared this perspective, highlighting a shared global desire for stability.
The anticipation for diplomatic progress is high as US President Donald Trump is scheduled to pay a state visit to China, his first in nine years. Key issues such as technology, global governance, and trade remain at the forefront of the international agenda.
Economic and trade cooperation continues to serve as the "ballast stone" of the relationship. In the face of mounting downward pressure on the global economy, stronger ties are seen as a necessity for recovery. The survey indicates that 74.6% of people worldwide believe the essence of China-US trade is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. This sentiment is even stronger among respondents from developing countries (78.2%) and the United States (75.3%).
Furthermore, the majority of those surveyed believe that economic frictions are not inherently irreconcilable. About 72.8% of American respondents believe that both nations can achieve mutual benefit through mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. Moreover, 77.9% of global respondents argued that economic and trade relations should function as a stabilizer rather than a source of conflict.
The path forward, according to the survey, requires a shift toward rational and pragmatic strategic perceptions. About 78.6% of respondents called on the United States to strengthen dialogue based on mutual respect to reduce misunderstandings, with agreement reaching 81.8% among those in developing countries.
The survey utilized an online panel sampling method, ensuring that all respondents were adults aged 18 and above, with a sample design intended to be broadly representative of the census-based age and gender distribution of each participating country.
