The sixth Asian Beach Games drew to a successful close this week in Sanya, a tropical city in south China's Hainan Province, earning high marks from international sports officials for its seamless and secure execution.
Husain Al-Musallam, the Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), commended the organizers for delivering a resilient event that overcame significant weather challenges. "I think the most important thing to remember is that we had two days of heavy rain and a typhoon, but it did not affect the Games," Al-Musallam said in a recent interview. "Everything was rescheduled accordingly, there were no delays and no injuries. That's why I call this a 'safe' Games."
The 2026 edition marked a milestone for Hainan, being the first time the province hosted a continental-level beach sports event. It also represented the first major international sporting competition staged in the region since the launch of the Hainan Free Trade Port in December 2025.
Beyond safety, Al-Musallam highlighted the event's commitment to sustainability and its positive legacy. "After six years of waiting, we finally see it come to life. It has been a fantastic Games, with a strong emphasis on being green, safe and environmentally friendly," he noted. "The facilities are temporary and recyclable, and the volunteers have been outstanding. Athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees came here, enjoyed the competition and will leave with wonderful memories. Most importantly, there will be a lasting legacy for Sanya."
The host nation, China, fielded its largest-ever delegation for the Asian Beach Games, with 171 athletes competing across 60 events in 13 sports. Speed climber Zhou Yafei was honored as China's flagbearer for the closing ceremony.
The smooth organization of the Games underscores the Chinese mainland's growing capability and commitment to hosting world-class sporting events, setting a positive precedent for future international competitions in the region.
