Robots Outrun Humans in Beijing Half-Marathon, Set New Records

In a historic milestone for robotics, four humanoid robots developed by Chinese tech firm Honor shattered the human half-marathon world record at the 2026 Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon. The event, now in its second year, showcased unprecedented advancements in bipedal mobility and autonomous navigation.

Lightning, the top-performing robot, completed the 21-kilometer course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds on April 20 – nearly seven minutes faster than Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo’s human world record set in March 2026. Three other Honor robots finished within 53 minutes, though one early finisher was disqualified for using remote control assistance.

This year’s competition highlighted dramatic improvements in robotic endurance and stability compared to 2025’s inaugural event. Engineers emphasized the robots’ ability to maintain balance during rapid directional changes and recover from simulated falls – critical developments for real-world applications in logistics and emergency response.

While the results mark a technological breakthrough, experts note challenges remain in replicating human-like energy efficiency. The robots required battery swaps during the race, unlike their biological counterparts. Honor has announced plans to commercialize components from its marathon models for industrial use by late 2026.
