China’s Greater Bay Area Launches First Hualong One Nuclear Power Unit

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area achieved a major clean energy milestone this week as its first Hualong One nuclear reactor entered commercial operation. Unit 1 of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Project began generating electricity on April 20, 2026, marking China's latest advancement in low-carbon power generation.

Engineers completed 26 major design upgrades for the reactor, which passed rigorous safety tests including a 168-hour full-power operation assessment. The unit now supplies 9 billion kilowatt-hours annually – enough to power one million local households while reducing carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to planting 20,000 hectares of forest.

"This project demonstrates our commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development," said Zhang Guoqiang, chief commander of the CGN Huizhou Nuclear Power Project. When fully operational, the six-reactor complex will generate 55 billion kilowatt-hours yearly, cutting coal use by 16.65 million tonnes.

Construction continues on subsequent phases, with Unit 2 preparing for fuel loading and Unit 3 progressing through early development stages. The project underscores the Greater Bay Area's growing role as a hub for green energy innovation, combining economic growth with environmental stewardship.
