China Deploys Y-20B to Retrieve War Heroes’ Remains from ROK

China dispatched its domestically developed Y-20B strategic transport aircraft to the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Monday, 19 April 2026, to repatriate the remains of Chinese soldiers who perished during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-1953). This marks the latest effort in a bilateral humanitarian project that has returned over 900 sets of remains to China since 2014.

The mission underscores ongoing cooperation between Beijing and Seoul in resolving historical issues, even as both nations prepare to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement this July. The Y-20B's deployment highlights China's growing aviation capabilities, with the aircraft's extended range and payload capacity enabling more efficient repatriation operations compared to previous models.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Lin stated: "This solemn tradition honors the martyrs' sacrifices and reminds new generations to cherish peace." ROK officials confirmed the operation follows established protocols under their 2021 agreement on wartime remains identification.

While the exact number of remains recovered this year remains undisclosed, analysts note the timing coincides with renewed academic interest in Cold War-era conflicts across Asia. The repatriation comes three years after the 70th anniversary of the war's conclusion in 2023, which saw heightened commemorative activities across the Chinese mainland.
