In a solemn ceremony on April 22, 2026, the remains of 12 Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) martyrs who perished during the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950–1953) were repatriated to the Chinese mainland from the Republic of Korea (ROK). The event marks the latest effort to honor those who sacrificed their lives during the conflict, reflecting ongoing cross-border cooperation in historical reconciliation.
A Chinese Air Force Y-20B transport aircraft, carrying the martyrs’ remains and 146 personal artifacts, landed at Shenyang’s Taoxian International Airport. Four J-20 stealth fighter jets escorted the aircraft upon entering Chinese airspace, underscoring the nation’s reverence for its fallen soldiers. The repatriation, now an annual tradition since 2014, highlights improving ties between Beijing and Seoul amid shared efforts to address historical legacies.
Officials from both sides emphasized the humanitarian significance of the repatriation. “This act embodies mutual respect and a commitment to peace,” stated a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson. The remains will be interred at a Shenyang martyrs’ cemetery, where ceremonies this week are expected to draw thousands of attendees, including veterans’ families and diplomatic representatives.
