The 2026 UN Chinese Language Day and sixth China Media Group (CMG) Chinese Language Video Festival drew over 350 global delegates to Geneva's Palace of Nations on April 17. Co-hosted by CMG, China's Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, and the UN Office at Geneva, the event showcased China's cultural diplomacy through cutting-edge technology and traditional arts.
CMG President Shen Haixiong emphasized in a video address that Chinese characters serve as "cultural DNA," with the media group leveraging AI and creative programming to bridge civilizations. UN Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya praised the Chinese language as a vital conduit for international understanding, aligning with this year's theme of "Wisdom" – a value she noted resonates with the UN's multilateral mission.
Interactive sessions like "Seeing Words as Faces" saw young diplomats and students share personal connections to Chinese characters. Italian student Katia Poli's interpretation of "Yuan" (destiny) as a metaphor for cross-cultural bonds drew particular applause. Attendees experienced hybrid cultural displays ranging from AI poetry generators to live calligraphy demonstrations.
Established in 2010 during the traditional Chinese solar term "Grain Rain," UN Chinese Language Day continues gaining global traction. This sixth joint festival with CMG highlights growing international interest in Chinese linguistic heritage as a tool for 21st-century dialogue.
