The 17th United Nations Chinese Language Day was celebrated with a vibrant cultural event at UN headquarters in New York on April 13, 2026, emphasizing the role of language in fostering global understanding. Organized by China's Permanent Mission to the UN and China Media Group, the theme "Chinese Language Shining Civilizations" highlighted linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of multilateral cooperation.
Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN, connected this year’s event to two milestones: the 55th anniversary of China’s restoration of its lawful UN seat and the 80th anniversary of the UN’s Chinese Translation Service. He praised generations of language professionals for enabling cross-cultural dialogue, stating, "Chinese has faithfully documented the UN’s development and China’s collaboration with it, conveying multilateral ideals to the world."
Fu also noted surging global interest in Chinese culture, citing increased enrollment in language programs and travel to the Chinese mainland. "The celebration embodies the Global Civilization Initiative," he added, "promoting mutual learning among civilizations for a shared future."
