China, Turkmenistan Launch Fourth Phase of Galkynysh Gas Field Project

Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang and Turkmenistan's National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov jointly inaugurated the fourth phase of the Galkynysh gas field on April 18, 2026, marking a milestone in bilateral energy cooperation. The project, launched during a ceremony in Mary, Turkmenistan, aims to strengthen cross-regional energy security and economic ties.

Ding, a senior member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that the gas field expansion reflects the "shared aspirations" of both nations. He highlighted its role in supporting sustainable development and fostering regional prosperity, noting that China-Turkmenistan natural gas trade has already become a cornerstone of their strategic partnership.

The vice premier outlined a three-pillar approach for the project: prioritizing engineering excellence through high-standard construction, fostering innovation in resource management technologies, and enhancing technical knowledge-sharing between the two countries. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for overseas investors in Central Asia's energy sector.

With the Galkynysh field containing some of the world's largest natural gas reserves, this phase reinforces China's position as a key partner in Turkmenistan's energy infrastructure development. Analysts suggest the collaboration could influence pricing dynamics in Asian markets while supporting China's transition to cleaner energy sources.
