China Media Group (CMG) joined African broadcast leaders this week in Banjul for the 17th African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) General Assembly, marking the organization's 20th anniversary. The April 16-17 gathering saw CMG co-host the 'Our African Partners 2026' forum with AUB, drawing nearly 100 executives from 50 member states across the continent.
As an international AUB member since 2015, CMG showcased its latest collaborative projects including a new documentary series on sustainable development and a digital content exchange platform. 'This partnership exemplifies our shared commitment to telling authentic Global South stories,' stated CMG spokesperson Li Wei during the event.
The assembly comes as African media markets see 14% annual growth in digital infrastructure investments, with Chinese technology playing an increasing role in broadcast modernization efforts. Delegates discussed plans for a joint training initiative to develop 500 African media professionals by 2027.
Analysts note the timing aligns with broader cultural diplomacy efforts ahead of September's Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit in Dakar. The Gambia's Information Minister praised the collaboration as 'a bridge for mutual understanding' during closing remarks.
