Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Ngo Phuong Ly, wife of Vietnamese President To Lam, visited China's National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing this week, underscoring the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering bilateral relations. The two leaders' spouses explored the NCPA's opera house, virtual reality creative spaces, and recording studios, observing rehearsals of ethnic dance dramas and choir performances while discussing opportunities for cross-border artistic collaboration.
Celebrating Shared Heritage
Their visit aligns with ongoing efforts to mark the 75th anniversary of China-Vietnam diplomatic relations. Last August, the "Colorful China" art troupe from China's National Ethnic Affairs Commission captivated 1,500 Vietnamese spectators with traditional dances and music in Hanoi, showcasing narratives of historical friendship. Vietnamese officials praised the production's artistic quality and organizational precision.
Language and Tourism as Connectors
Cultural ties are further strengthened through educational initiatives. The Confucius Institute at Hanoi University has trained over 30,000 Vietnamese students in Chinese since 2016, while cultural activities like Hanfu exhibitions have drawn 100,000 participants. "Demand for Chinese-proficient professionals has surged alongside economic cooperation," noted Qin Yonghua, the institute's Chinese director.
Tourism statistics reflect growing people-to-people engagement: cross-border trips between China and Vietnam reached 4.75 million in early 2026, a 20.6% year-on-year increase according to Guangxi immigration data.
