China's coastal shipping industry entered a new era this week as the world's largest pure electric intelligent container ship commenced commercial operations on April 13, 2026. The 10,000-tonne-class vessel represents a technological leap for sustainable maritime transport, capable of carrying 120 standard containers with zero direct emissions.
Developed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, the ship features:
- Battery capacity equivalent to 1,500 electric cars
- 1,000 km operational range per charge
- Smart navigation systems powered by AI
- Automated cargo management solutions
The vessel's deployment along the Yangtze River Delta route is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by 5,000 tonnes compared to conventional ships. A Ministry of Transport spokesperson stated: "This innovation aligns with China's dual carbon goals while maintaining industrial competitiveness."
Industry analysts note the breakthrough comes as global demand for green shipping solutions intensifies, with Asian markets accounting for 65% of new maritime energy transition investments this year.
