Iran to Hold Massive Funeral Processions for Late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei

Plans for Final Farewell

Iran has announced detailed plans for the burial of its former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli attack on February 28. According to Mohammad-Amin Tavakkolizadeh, Tehran's deputy mayor for social and cultural affairs, the late leader will be laid to rest in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

In accordance with his final will and the recommendations of his family, Khamenei will be buried at the holy shrine of Imam Reza. The process will begin with three days of farewell ceremonies and a 24-hour funeral procession in Tehran, which may take place at the mausoleum or Imam Khomeini's Grand Mosalla. Following the events in the capital, the body will be transferred to Qom and then to Mashhad for similar commemorative ceremonies.

These events are scheduled to commence in the second half of June. Officials anticipate a massive turnout, with up to 20 million people expected to participate in the Tehran ceremonies alone.

Transition of Leadership

The burial arrangements come as the nation adjusts to a new era of leadership. In early March, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late leader, was selected as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, ensuring a continuation of the leadership structure following the February tragedy.

Diplomatic Uncertainty with the United States

While the country prepares for these national mourning events, the diplomatic landscape between Tehran and Washington remains fraught with contradiction. A report from the semi-official Fars news agency, citing an informed source, indicates that message exchanges between Iran and the US have been halted for several days. The agency noted that the final message sent from Tehran to Washington concerned Lebanon and has since garnered significant global attention.

However, this report stands in direct contrast to statements from US President Donald Trump. In a recent post on Truth Social, President Trump dismissed the claims of a diplomatic breakdown, asserting that negotiations between the US and Iran have been "going on continuously" and labeling reports of a suspension as "false and erroneous."
